What type of sealant should I use in a square foot garden?

I am building a 2X8 foot raised square foot (vegetable) garden. Using plywood and other random wood. Someone suggested I seal it with polyurethane or exterior house paint so that it won’t rot, but won’t that be bad for my vegetables?

Vegetable Garden Update #9

Vegetable Garden Update (8.21.09). Quick mention on what I have been doing w/all the rapid growing Swiss Chard. Yellow (Banana) peppers are gone; I actually canned them and will show that on the next vid. LOTS-O-TOMATOES on the vines. When they ripen, LOOK OUT!!! Things are progress fairly well.
