Despite cool and rainy weather with very little sunshine, the garden is coming along. Slowly, coming along that is. Added potatoes growing in bags (Smart-Pots) and a motion detecting sprinkler.

Will These Screws Work for a Raised Garden Bed?

I’m building a raised garden bed. I ended up choosing 4 (Qty) 6′ length 2" x 12" pressure treated boards, to build a 6′ square bed. Of course it is actually less than 2" thick. I bought galvanized corner brackets, 2 for each corner. The Home Depot guy told me I needed special screws too, for the pressure treated wood, but that seemed a bit excessive to me since I have perfectly good screws at home.

My question is:

Will the black 1" wood screws that I have on hand suffice for the project?

If not, why? Do I need something longer? I only need to attach the corner brackets to each 2 x 12 to make a square, so I’m thinking 1" wood screws should be fine.
To clarify one thing: They did advise me to get the coated exterior screws, but I am wondering if this is really necessary for this particular project, especially since I have galvi brackets.

And then my other question is regardless of coated or not, is 1" a good length?
Duane W: I am disabled and getting out isn’t easy for me and "just a box" happens to be expensive for me. I was able to get as much as I did for this project based on gift cards. So before you get all snappy, please understand that some of us ask these questions for very specific and necessary reasons. I simply want to finish a garden box on a budget and am asking for advice, not your judgment!
If you don’t have something constructive to contribute, then why post at all? Geez….

If the holes in the brackets are 6mm 1/4" I would be inclined to bolt the boards together through the brackets.
If all is in place on the ground and level (or near enough) then your 1" screws might just about hold but any movement will tear them out, I would go for 1 1/2" / 1 3/4" screws as thick as will go through the holes in the brackets. It will be a long time before ordinary screws rust out, in x years if they have bady rusted pop some more in alongside.
The usual way of making raised beds is with a piece of 2 x 2" in each corner with the boards either nailed or screwed to the 2 x 2. but brackets should be fine, I assume they will at the top and bottom of the boards as 12 x 2 will bow with the weather.
