Happy July everybody! Here’s a quick garden update from “farmer” George to show you whats been happening to my 5 x 12 foot raised garden bed and also some of my other garden areas…We’ve been having lots of high heat and humidity which really kicks the tomatos, cukes, zukes into gear (while bolting the lettuce). Everything is organic here (except for the clorinated/florinated water from the garden hose). I hope all of your gardens are doing well this year…thank God we have not had the huge rain we did last June (although we sure could use some now). Raised Garden Beds

The first of the Raised Garden Beds we will have this year. I got a really good deal on this plywood, so I’m putting together four of these. They are 28″ deep, 4ft by 4ft. Went with taller beds because my Mom and mother in Law are looking forward to helping, but neither of them are big fans of bending or kneeling. I will also be building a 14″ high one for the girls to plant some stuff of their own.

I have a raised garden bed kit that I am looking to use on a deck. I need to put a bottom on it?

I have a raised garden bed kit that I am looking to use on a deck. I need to put a bottom on it and then raise it up off the deck a little so the decking doesn’t rot underneath. The kit is just sides and corners. Can anyone recommend a method for modifying this kit? It is pressure treated wood.
The bed is going on a roof top deck which was built to be able to support a hot tub.

unless you have a monster deck, it’s not a good idea to drop the weight of that dirt and wood on it. Why not put the beds on the ground? A cubic foot of dirt weighs 100 pounds, then there’s the lumber, the moisture. I wouldn’t dream of doing this. Not good a’tall.

Building a Raised Gardens Box

Building a raised gardens Box.

Wish to grow vegetables without having a lot work. Elevated beds tend to be the simplest way to obtain a started as all you’ve got to complete is create a box and fill it with dirt, there you have it!

Step 1
Figure out what size of a box you need to create. Rectangles would be the easiest.
As an example a single tomato seed requirements about four feet square (2 feet x 2 feet). If you purchase plants at a nursery they’ll be pleased to let you know how much space you have to grow them.
Step 2
Figure out exactly how much lumber you’ll need.
Simply accumulate the border from the box you’ll need. If you work with 2×6’s, double the length. 2×12 work excellent. Additionally you’ll need 4 feet of board to create the corners stronger.
Step 3
Purchase the lumber (and nails, sludge hammer, etc. if you do not have them).
Redwood is best suited. Stress treat can last, but is filled with chemicals you wouldn’t want. Doug fir is great, but won’t endure too long.
Step 4
Reduce you lumber for the preferred measurements.
Be sure to add 3 inches for the width if you would like you boxes to seem fairly on the exterior.
Step 5
Reduce 4 pieces of wood to about ten in. high for those four corners.
For those you are able to reduce wider boards small, but it’s not necessary.
Step 6
Assemble it.
Nail the duration boards to corner boards ensuring they’re even in the ends. After that nail the size boards for the corners so that they overlap the length boards and also anything looks square and even.
Step 7
Include soil and put you crops in.

How do I naturally get rid of termites in my garden raised beds?

They are only in one of my raised beds (which is sort of under a tree. It’s an organic garden so I don’t want to use anything harsh…

The termites aren’t there to eat your vegies, so it is either for the water or to eat the bordering timbers.
If they are eating the timbers, get rid of them. Hardiflex cement sheet works OK but is brittle. If you can afford it, short section of large diameter concrete pipe are excellent for raised beds but these days, recycled plastic planks are more visually acceptable (just pricey).

If the termites are thee for the waters, build you beds up on a layer of crushed rock (6 inches/ 150 mm) covered with a geotextile. That will improve drainage (you’ll need to water more often) and keep the termites well below the plants.

On the other hand, are these house-eating pest termites? If there’s a risk, get your place inspected.
A modern insect-hormone based baiting system shouldn’t offend organic sensibilities. Better yet, get you neighbor to do the baiting on their property.

Depending on the species and where you are, the termites might also be discouraged by a rich, damp soil with a very high bacterial and fungal activity. Would need to know a lot more about your predicament before recommending that.
