My introduction to gardening care is one of my earliest memories. Although there was a brief period during my early childhood when we lived in the middle of a big city with no space for a garden, we always had a garden and much of the gardening care was up to the children of the family. Since I am second oldest, naturally I had the opportunity to put in many hours in the family garden.

From first grade on, most of our backyard was taken up by garden. I loved the day in spring when the garden was tilled and the rows measured off. It was my delight to help with the planting, but not such a delight to see all the weeds that came up along with the plants. The pesky mosquitoes didn’t help matters any! They made gardening care a chore instead of fun.

As I grew older, I discovered a new way to garden – using raised beds. I devoured many books on gardening and experimented with many different methods, but none has made gardening care easier than using raised beds.

In another post, I may address some of the other gardening methods I’ve tried, but suffice it to say that traditional gardening that requires tilling a large space, only to make paths out of most of it in order to care for the plants, is one of the least efficient and least enjoyable methods I’ve tried.

Raised beds make gardening care much, much easier. The beds can be constructed such that there is no need to ever step into the garden itself, the plants can be grown closer together than you would ever imagine so weeds are minimal, no tilling of soil is necessary and the soil can be customized to the specific needs of the plants to be grown in that particular bed.

My objective with this site is to collect as many helpful gardening care tips as possible to enable you to enjoy your gardening experience to the maximum.

I started a new white onion bulb, 2 green onions, a Rooster Spur pepper plant, and a Cherokee Purple tomato plant. To help save money, I have resorted to using 2 liter soda bottles and milk jugs when the plants can use that size pot.

I also got a smaller full spectrum light bulb (27 watt cfl, 100 watt incandescent equivalent) and a hangable lamp. It is not the final solution, but an interim step until I can order a 105 watt, 6500k bulb.

This video will be the first in a video series documenting how an Upside Down Hanging Vegetable Garden (my first attempt) grows during the 09 season. Not sure how often I will update, I’m guessing right now every 2 weeks or so.

I’ve seen a bunch of helpful videos on how to make the planters and a few suggestions on how to care for them, but I didn’t find many “Series” on the progression of vegetable growth specifically with the Upside Down Vegetables. So that is why I wanted to make these videos.

I absolutely welcome and want questions/comments/suggestions/tips (keep it related to the topic). I also posted some potential questions below. This is my first attempt at any type of vegetable growing. All I have learned so far has been from different websites and of course YouTube videos (thanks to all that have posted their Upside Down videos and general veggie gardening videos).

Pretty much what I am trying to do is see how well I can grow vegetables upside down. I didn’t want to dig up my yard as I don’t have much space, plus hanging vegetables has benefits like no weeding, staking, less bugs, and more (at least this is what I’ve read). Basically I wanted something easy, or at least what I think will be easy. Not sure exactly how the series will evolve, but I figure this is a start.

Here’s some general questions you may want to know (ask away with anything else too):
-Veggie Garden Location?: Buford, GA
-When did I plant?: Early March 09′
-How much sun daily?: 8-12hrs
-Soil Type: Miracle Grow Moisture Control.
-Anything else in soil (fertilizer, manure, etc)?: No, nothing else in soil. I want to see how well they will do with just this soil. I’ll probably add some miracle grow fertilizer after 3 months.
-What am I growing: 4 types of tomatoes (Bush Early Girl, Heatwave, Husky Cherry Red, Better Boy), Red Peppers, Jalapenos, Banana Peppers, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Strawberries.
-Did I grow any plants from seeds: No. For me it was more convenient to get them already grown and plant them upside down (which is pretty much how all the videos and websites said to do it).
