Best height for raised garden bed?

I’m building a raised garden bed and originally thought I would build it with 12 inches high, but now I’m having second thoughts and wondering if I would add another 2×6 and make it 18 high. Will the extra 6 inches improve the look of the bed and improve the performance of the veggie garden or is it overkill? The size of my raised bed is 36 feet long by 6 feet wide.

My beds are only 12 inches high, and I grow everything even potatoes. If you want to raise it higher and put a edge on the top you can sit on it better.

It won’t be any more or less beneficial to the plant but your back might thank you!

As always in gardening it depends.

Generally course, loose soils like sand and light potting soil will drain water faster then fine soils like clay. So if your soil drains fast it may be better to keep the bed lower so water will hang around longer for the plant to take into its roots. If you have clay soils then a higher bed will drain faster because of gravity.

However the back ache issue can be real serious. ;-)
