i wouldn't use a cheese grater on top of a plastic bowl. a clear tupperware container with small holes drilled into the lid would be a better temporary solution until you get a permanent home. one of those small plastic critter carriers would be a good permanent home. i have a 10 gallon aquarium set up for my 3 snails. as for feeding them; soft non acidic fruits and veggies, leaves, turtle food, and a cuttlefish bone (a must so they can get enough calcium for their shell). here's a really good website that goes into detail on taking care of pet snails. they even have a forum that you can sign up to be able to ask more questions. http://www.petsnails.co.uk/care/
References :
Snails like rotting lettuce and other greens. Go to the sporting goods store and get a Cricket / Grass hopper bait cage to keep them in. Don't forget to mist the inside of the cage every day. Snails and slugs require moist surrounding.

Google "Growing Escargot" for a everything you could ever want to know about raising snails.
References :
Put something on top of the grater to weigh it down. Your snails will crawl up the side and slowly push the lid off! Strength in numbers!
You can feed them corn meal and dark greens.
Train them to stand upright and beg.
