Why not put in a walkway around the garden? Get some bricks and lay it out about 4 feet away from the edge of the garden bed and do it on all sides. Then get some stepping stones and some gravel and you have yourself a walkway.
References :
I went to a brick retail store and purchased 3" X 3" bricks. Dug trench around my planting area and placed the bricks in that trench at ground level. The mower blade goes over the bricks, gave a neat, trimmed appearance and not permanent.
References :
Get concrete squares, circles, or rectangles and as much tiny 'ground cover' as you can afford. Mulch (generally redwood bark) will leach the minerals from the soil, and rocks are really difficult to remove ... the ground covers that are tiny both smell really good when stepped on and can be pulled up easily, and those 'stepping stones' can be moved and rearranged as your garden changes ...
References :
I would put mulch down. It will decompose over a couple years should you decide to put in a garden you can just mix it in with the dirt.
