Gardening Care Introduction

My introduction to gardening care is one of my earliest memories. Although there was a brief period during my early childhood when we lived in the middle of a big city with no space for a garden, we always had a garden and much of the gardening care was up to the children of the family. Since I am second oldest, naturally I had the opportunity to put in many hours in the family garden.

From first grade on, most of our backyard was taken up by garden. I loved the day in spring when the garden was tilled and the rows measured off. It was my delight to help with the planting, but not such a delight to see all the weeds that came up along with the plants. The pesky mosquitoes didn’t help matters any! They made gardening care a chore instead of fun.

As I grew older, I discovered a new way to garden – using raised beds. I devoured many books on gardening and experimented with many different methods, but none has made gardening care easier than using raised beds.

In another post, I may address some of the other gardening methods I’ve tried, but suffice it to say that traditional gardening that requires tilling a large space, only to make paths out of most of it in order to care for the plants, is one of the least efficient and least enjoyable methods I’ve tried.

Raised beds make gardening care much, much easier. The beds can be constructed such that there is no need to ever step into the garden itself, the plants can be grown closer together than you would ever imagine so weeds are minimal, no tilling of soil is necessary and the soil can be customized to the specific needs of the plants to be grown in that particular bed.

My objective with this site is to collect as many helpful gardening care tips as possible to enable you to enjoy your gardening experience to the maximum.

Gardening Care Tips – January 11, 2010

I am gardening in zone 7 so please take my gardening care tips with that in mind. We have just had 4 of the coldest days I can remember in a North Texas winter. In fact it was so cold that our small private lake (bigger than a pond) completely froze over. Before the cold weather hit, I got the idea to cover my really sensitive plants with packing bubble strips. I had a stash of them so I covered my lettuce, arugula, carrots, beets and spinach and even a few of the broccoli plants with bubble strips. Then I covered each with an empty feed bag, a tarp or a cardboard box. I was completely amazed this morning when I went out to the garden after 4 days of being undercover. As I uncovered each row of plants I was more and more amazed. My radishes which were not covered may not recover (no pun intended) but all the things that had bubble wrap on them look great. I still have tender little lettuce, arugula and spinach plants doing great. Also beets and carrots and most of the broccoli and collards are looking great too. I picked a few turnips and we’ll have those for supper. So before your next bout of cold nights or if you’re just looking for a way to get a jump on your spring planting, drag out that old bubble wrap you have lying around and put it to good use in your garden!

Gardening Care Tips – January 4, 2010

gardening care tips for 2010: Get out your seeds from last year and see which ones are usable this season. Then collect your seed catalogs, or visit your favorite online seed company stores and start making your list of what you will need for your early spring planting. If you’re in zone 7 like we are, you’ll soon be wanting to plant all the early spring crops such as spinach, arugula, radishes, kohlrabi, carrots, beets and lettuce. While I’m sitting by our cozy fireplace attempting to keep warm in the coldest week of this winter, I’m dreaming of my spring garden…how about you?

Rabbit Raising and Gardening: The Perfect Pair

Raising rabbits is the perfect complement to gardening. We already knew this but rediscovered it last year when our lionhead rabbits and our garden were right next to each other. As the rabbit cages were cleaned, all of those lovely and powerful pellets (otherwise known as manure) went straight into the garden beds. As a result we had the most prolific garden we’ve ever had.

Most people do not realize that rabbit manure is like little magic bullets that can be put directly onto the garden. They will not burn your plants, but instead will provide nutrients that will enrich your soil enabling plants to keep on producing. Rabbit manure is even higher in nitrogen than poultry manures and it also contains a large amount of phosphorus–important for flower and fruit formation. As a result our tomato crop last year was “over the top.” In all my years of gardening I have never seen one tomato plant produce so many tomatoes. When it looked like the crop was tapering off, we would just add a small trowel full of rabbit manure around the base of each tomato plant and within a few days more flowers would begin to form. We were still picking ripe tomatoes after our first frost here in North Texas. (We had covered the plants with tarps to give them some protection.)

Since rabbit manure doesn’t really need to be composted, it saves on time and energy. However, even though it doesn’t need to be composted we do add generous amounts of rabbit manure to our compost pile to enable it to process and become good quality compost very quickly.

And the rabbits will gladly eat the excess garden greens such as radish tops, carrot tops (and carrots if you want to spare them), collard greens, turnip greens, etc. Just don’t feed them lettuce or cabbage. Adding greens to their diet will decrease the amount of money you need to spend on commercial rabbit food.

The other advantage of rabbits is their therapeutic nature. They are great stress relievers especially when you handle them and brush them and they make absolutely marvelous pets. So the double therapy of working in your garden and handling rabbits should help your stress level – unless of course, the rabbits manage to get loose and eat your garden!
